Descendants of William Tiller - Old Rappahannock County, VA

A Quick Note - While there may be those who find the book of Genesis enthralling, this author personally finds it one of the most difficult to bear through with the endless 'begat's. Therefore, many of my posts will deal with more of the basic biographical information in bullet form and try not to devolve quite so much while remaining clear and concise. However, I will attach or link to documents containing the same and, in many cases, more genealogical information.

Now without further ado...

William Tiller - born bef. 1664 - Feb 20/Mar 4, 1718

  • Record of residency in Old Rappahannock County, VA. - first record found was of a lawsuit naming William as plaintiff against the estate of John Erwin for a bill dated Dec. 6, 1684. The suit was settled 1685
  • Married to Mary Tiller nee unknown.
  • Man of modest means but had guardianship of minor Samuel Nichols, whom's land he lived on until Nichols was of age. William then purchased 100 acres from Nichols at a very favorable price.
  • Upon death, William left the modest personal estate and half of the 100 acres to his son John and half to his wife Mary.
  • There is evidence to support the notion that William was imported as an indentured servant by Rees Hughs in 1650. Hughs, through the Headwright system, received 450 acres in New Kent County, VA and the importation of 9 people including a William Tiller.
  • Information and documentation that would likely indicate if the two William Tillers listed in records were lost in an arson fire set by John Price Posey.
More information on William and subsequent genealogy through the mid 1800s can be found in the documentation linked below:
