Coming to the Colonies
According to available records, our family came to the United States during the colonial period arriving in Virginia as early as the mid 1600s. While other posts will deal more specifically with the Tiller family's story, this is more background about what immigration in Virginia looked like.
Original settlers came in the early 17th century from midland and southern counties of England, holding with the belief that the Tillers originated for southern England and Wales. While up to three quarters of those arriving at the time were 'imported' as indentured servants or transported convicts, there was a large influx of slaves beginning in 1619. By the early to mid 1700s, settlers from Germany and France began arriving. As territory moved westward, so did much of the population and by the 19th century foreign immigration to Virginia.
